My 8th grade students read a Scholastic Scope article called, "Why Are Your Clothes So Cheap?" by Kristin Lewis. This article offered a chance for student's to see how their clothes are made and the terrible plight that garment workers around the world have been through. It was amazing to see how this new concept really opened the eyes of my 8th graders, for many of whom had never been introduced to this type of information before.
After reading about Kapona, a 14 year old garment worker (making 50 Cents an hour), students and I researched clothing companies and their factories over seas. Students were able to choose their favorite brands and write a business letters to these brands in groups. The objective was to use textual evidence from the article, research and their own opinions - urging brands to make changes in their polices to help garment workers over seas. After writing, we mailed the letters to their business headquarters! (We are anxiously awaiting responses!!)

I'm beyond impressed by their work! Below are some samples of their Final Draft Business Letters!!
This was such a great learning opportunity for my students! I hope businesses reply (when/if) they do... I'll be sure to update when I can!
