I never really understood why there would be a three day weekend for Labor Day when school just starts... For a kid, it's heaven but for an educator with a lot to cover, in a little time period... It's frustrating!
I felt a "crunch" this week with only having four days of instruction. It also didn't help that everyday it was 80 degree+ weather with NO airconditioning in my building. At the end of the day today - my poor kiddos had enough of the heat & were ready to go home! We did a variety of different skills this week - I try to cover strategies in a "Fun" way but sometimes an old school method is necessary to make sure they are retaining and understanding the skills I am reviewing. For example, in reading this week, my 7th graders read "Thank You Ma'm" by Langston Hughes and completed a vocab worksheet, types of conflict and cause & effect graphic organizer, and some comprehension questions. The story was great and we did some role playing in some of the scenes that were written in detail. I truly believe a classroom has to have a healthy balance of different methods in order to be successful! This week was short, but a lot of learning happened. Check out the pictures below to see the highlights of student work!
Next week, we continue NWEA testing and move along with our short story units! busy - busy week ahead!! Until next Friday,
Ritchie
