So far, given - it's only been just slightly over 2 1/2 weeks of summer ... I've been very fortunate to be able attend two conferences provided by Tazewell County ROE #53. :)
The first conference was "10 things that Matter From Assessment to Grading" by Tom Schimmer.
This session was very informative about 1. The types of Assesments used in the classroom (differences, etc) 2. HOW to incorporate a variety of formative assessments in your classroom. and 3. Standards Based Grading structures and WHY we should follow this model.
Schimmer (obviously) has such a passion for these concepts... as displayed by his engaging presentation and speaking style. This conference was so beneficial to my growth as an educator! It was awesome receiving a copy of his book as well! :) it's filled with awesome examples of formative assessment annnnd I promise!! It's not a snooze to read!!
If you want to know more about him - or possible sessions to go to.. Check out - http://tomschimmer.com
The Second conference I was able to attend was more content based - relating specifically to the Writing Standards of ELA 6-12th grade.
This conference was really beneficial to review the paradigm shifts related to writing of the New Illinois Learning Standards AND collaborate on different resources, etc to implement in the classroom!
Marilee Sprenger & Deanna Butler were co-presenters and gave us all ALOT to think above for the fall! :)
I can't wait to try out some new activities like "Spar with a Partner" & "Beach Ball"!!
This website that was introduced to us today- " Writing Matters- Illinois" is a best kept secret that must be shared!! ;)
If you do ELA (or even if you don't!!) you should really check it out ...
